Why DDR5 ECC

The next generation of server memory

DDR5 delivers double the bandwidth of DDR4, on-die ECC for improved reliability, and higher density — making it the standard for modern enterprise workloads.

2× the bandwidth
DDR5 delivers up to 6400 MT/s compared to DDR4’s 3200 MT/s maximum. Faster memory bus means better performance for data-intensive workloads.
On-die ECC
DDR5 includes on-die error correction as standard, catching single-bit errors before they reach the memory controller. Critical for database and virtualisation workloads.
Higher density
DDR5 supports up to 128GB per DIMM on current platforms, allowing larger memory configurations in the same number of slots.

Compatibility

Supported server platforms

DDR5 ECC memory requires a server platform with DDR5-capable memory slots. The major platforms we supply for are listed below.

HPE ProLiant
Gen11 servers (DL360, DL380, ML350 and more) support DDR5. Gen10 and earlier are DDR4 only. Check your iLO or server QuickSpecs for confirmation.
Dell PowerEdge
The R750, R760, R860 and R960 series support DDR5 on Intel Sapphire Rapids and Emerald Rapids platforms. Verify via Dell’s memory configuration tool.
Lenovo ThinkSystem
SR630 V3, SR650 V3 and SR850 V3 support DDR5. Use Lenovo’s ServerProven tool or contact us to confirm compatibility for your model.

DDR4 servers are not compatible with DDR5. DDR5 uses a physically different slot (288-pin, different key position) and runs at a different voltage. Attempting to install DDR5 in a DDR4 slot is not physically possible.

FAQ

Common questions

Is DDR5 backwards compatible with DDR4? +
No. DDR5 uses a different physical slot, different voltage and a different memory controller interface. DDR5 modules cannot be installed in DDR4 slots and vice versa. Your server must natively support DDR5.
What is DDR5 ECC and why does it matter? +
ECC (Error-Correcting Code) memory automatically detects and corrects single-bit memory errors. For servers running databases, virtualisation or financial workloads, ECC is essential to prevent data corruption. All enterprise server memory should be ECC.
RDIMM vs LRDIMM: which do I need? +
RDIMM is the correct choice for the vast majority of enterprise servers. LRDIMM is only needed when you require very high memory density (128GB+ per slot) and your server explicitly supports it. When in doubt, choose RDIMM.
What DDR5 speeds are available? +
We supply DDR5-4800, DDR5-5600 and DDR5-6400. DDR5-5600 is the most widely supported enterprise speed. Always check your server’s maximum supported speed — installing a faster module than the server supports results in it running at the server’s maximum, not the module’s rated speed.
Can I mix DDR5 speeds in the same server? +
Technically possible on most platforms, but not recommended. When mixing speeds, all modules run at the speed of the slowest installed module. For best performance and stability, use matching modules throughout.
Do you offer volume pricing? +
Yes — volume pricing is available for MSPs, IT resellers and enterprise customers ordering multiple modules or across multiple servers. Contact sales@verilicense.co.uk with your requirements for a tailored quote.
