What is HPE ROK?
Windows Server, licensed for HPE hardware
HPE ROK (Reseller Option Kit) is an OEM version of Windows Server distributed through HPE’s reseller channel. It is pre-configured for HPE ProLiant servers and includes everything you need to licence your server.
HPE hardware only
ROK licences are BIOS-locked to HPE ProLiant hardware. They activate automatically on eligible HPE servers and cannot be transferred to non-HPE machines.
Certificate of Authenticity
Every HPE ROK licence includes a physical or digital Certificate of Authenticity — your proof of genuine licensing for compliance and audit purposes.
HPE installation support
HPE ROK licences include 90 days of HPE-backed installation support — not available with OEM or retail editions purchased elsewhere.

Which edition do you need?
Windows Server 2022 and 2025 are both available. Choose the edition based on your virtualisation requirements and core count.
Standard
Covers up to 16 cores (2 sockets). Includes licencing for up to 2 virtual machines. The correct choice for most single-socket and dual-socket HPE servers.

Common questions
What is an HPE ROK licence? +
HPE ROK (Reseller Option Kit) is an OEM version of Windows Server licenced specifically for HPE ProLiant servers. It is BIOS-locked to HPE hardware, meaning it can only be installed on eligible HPE servers. It includes the OS, Certificate of Authenticity and 90 days of HPE installation support.
Can I use an HPE ROK licence on a non-HPE server? +
No. HPE ROK licences are hardware-bound and can only be legally used on HPE ProLiant servers. If you need to licence a non-HPE server, you need a retail or OEM Windows Server licence instead.
My server has more than 16 cores: what do I need? +
The base Standard and Datacenter licences cover up to 16 physical cores. For servers with more than 16 cores, you need additional 2-core add-on packs for each pair of cores above 16. Contact us and we’ll calculate the exact requirement for your server.
Can HPE ROK licences be transferred between servers? +
ROK licences are hardware-tied and are not designed for transfer between servers outside of HPE warranty replacement terms. They are intended to remain with the original HPE server they were deployed on.
Do ROK licences include Client Access Licences (CALs)? +
No — Standard and Datacenter ROK licences do not include CALs. User or Device CALs must be purchased separately for each user or device that accesses the server. Essentials is the only edition with no separate CAL requirement (limited to 25 users).
